Memento for Chamber Ensemble is a set of contemporary variations on a harmonisation of God Save the Queen, taken from an earlier 2014 composition by John – Lightbobs – written for an educational commission featuring 600 young musicians (chorus and orchestra), premiered at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.
Memento has been commissioned by pianist Greg Martin and the Ronen Ensemble to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War. It concludes John’s work on this subject, 2013-14 – the earlier Lightbobs tells the story of the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry, and Memento is dedicated to Private James Traill who died on day one of the First Battle of Ypres, aged 33, leaving a wife and two children behind.
Greg Martin, lecturer at the University of Indianapolis, regularly appears in the St Anne’s College recital series, and will lead a performance workshop in June 2015.
