Commencing on 12th March 2016, John will lead a one-week residency with the Dutch group Joint Venture Percussion Duo (Laurent Warnier & Rachel Xi Zhang), culminating in the premier of his Double Concerto for Vibraphone and Marimba at the Sheldonian Theatre on Friday 18 March at 7.30pm. The concert, for Age UK, also features the premier of Bob Chilcott’s The Voyage.
The Arts Council/Artswork commission, organised by the Oxfordshire County Music Service, has involved John writing two concertos, both involving outreach in Oxfordshire schools. John’s Trumpet Concerto was premiered by Simon Desbruslais and the Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra in January, to 1,200 children, with the programme also including new works by Key Stage 3 students. Simon subsequently performed two recitals for St Anne’s, the first with international pianist Clare Hammond, and the second with the St Anne’s Camerata.
The percussion collaboration begins with the duo’s recital at St Anne’s college on Saturday 12 March. The audience will include secondary school students as part of St Anne’s Beyond the Dots outreach series, and during the week, John and JVP2 will collaborate with a further 700 young Oxfordshire musicians. The project ends with two concerts, the first at the Sheldonian Theatre, with a repeat performance on Saturday 19 March with the City of Southampton Orchestra in Hampshire.
