John will conduct the Oxford Philharmonic in the final of the Oxfordshire Concerto Competition, on Thursday 10 March 2016 in the Sheldonian Theatre at 7.30pm.

The programme features Strauss Horn Concerto No.1 (Myrddin Rees Davies, St Hilda’s),  Mozart Clarinet Concerto (David Mears, Royal Academy of Music), and Prokofiev Violin Concerto No.1 (Emma Lisney, Pembroke), with a panel that includes John, Marios Papadopoulos (Music Director, OP), Niel Immelman (Royal College of Music), Natalia Lemeiko, and Dr Roger Allen.

This year’s competition was open to performers aged 23 years and under, studying, or living in Oxfordshire (in full-time education).  Two initial rounds precede the semi-final, in which six competitors perform with the Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra.  In the 2015-16 competition, this included St Anne’s first year music student, Harry Baker, performing the Grieg Piano Concerto.

The competition was founded in 2011 by a partnership between John, Marios Papodopoulos and the Oxford Philharmonic, and the Oxfordshire County Music Service. In 2014 the competition was split across two levels, between a Junior  (<18) and Senior (<23) competition each year.  Previous winners include Jan Elsner, Daniel Shao, Makoto Nakata, and Savitri Grier, many of which have featured in the St Anne’s College Beyond the Dots recital series.
